Music Magazines
L/O: to explore the terminology and genres of popular music magazines
12/09/18
Typography: he style and appearance of printed matter.
Layout: he way in which the parts of something are arranged or laid out.
Lexis: The total stock of words in a language.
Colour Palette: Palette can refer to a range of colors. A platform used for moving things is a pallet. The meaning of the word palette has extended beyond actual colors to include figurative colours.
Mis-en-scene: Mise en Scene: Color Composition. Mise en Scene is an interesting concept which can be used for film production. ... The problem with it is that it's such a different concept which means many different things. Mise en Scene simply meanscomposing the scene, and there are many different aspects which can be addressed.
Pop Magazines:

For all of these magazines they are all pretty much the same with a bright colour palette. The shot type with all the photos is straight on/head on and the image contents are of the celebrity. The typography is also much the same as the masthead it the biggest with plugs and pull quotes. In some of the magazines the lexis is is a lot and cramed with words but the others have minimal words and get to the point.
Rock Magazines:

On the rock magazines. the colour is exactly the same black and goth like. the content contains of someone screaming or promoting there band and the shot type is close up on there face. the typography is with the masthead bold and the rest of the writing scribbly. the lexis is a lot of words on the side but not much in the middle. The layout of the rock magazines is very precise. where everything goes is thought out so the band wants the reader to think of this or that when reading there magazine.
Rap/Hip Hop Magazines:
On the Rap/hip hop magazines are all different. the colour palette on one of them is a bright red backround.the image content is a stereotypical black man coverd in tattoos. (Not trying to be racist) and the shot type is on them up to the head from the torso. The typography has a very big, bold masthead with little quotes on the side. The lexis is very minimal . The layout is really poorly done as its kinda just stuck there.

Mojo facts
Mojo is a popular music magazine published initially by Emap, and since January 2008 by Bauer, monthly in the United Kingdom. Following the success of the magazine Q, publishers Emap were looking for a title that would cater for the burgeoning interest in classic rock music. Mojo was first published on 15 October 1993;[2] in keeping with its classic rock aesthetic, the first issue had Bob Dylan and John Lennon as its first cover stars. Noted for its in-depth coverage of both popular and cult acts, it acted as the inspiration for Blender and Uncut. Many noted music critics have written for it, including Charles Shaar Murray, Greil Marcus, Nick Kent and Jon Savage. The launch editor of Mojo was Paul Du Noyer[3][4] and his successors have included Mat Snow, Paul Trynka and Pat Gilbert.
While some criticise it for its frequent coverage of classic rock acts such as the Beatles and Bob Dylan, it has nevertheless featured many newer and "left-field" acts. It was the first mainstream magazine in the UK to focus on the White Stripes, whom it has covered as zealously as it has many older acts.
Mojo regularly includes a covermount CD that ties in with a current magazine article or theme. It introduced the Mojo Honours list, an awards ceremony that is a mixture of readers' and critics' awards, in 2004.
In early 2010, Mojo was involved in a controversial move by its new parent company, Bauer, to unilaterally impose a new contract on all photographers and writers, taking away their copyright, and offloading liability for libel or copyright infringement from the publisher onto the contributor. Two hundred photographers and writers from Mojo and Bauer's other music magazines, Kerrang!and Q, were reported as refusing to work under the new terms.[5]

Even just for a day
I'd roll outta bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go
Drink beer with the guys
And chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wanted
And I'd never get confronted for it
'Cause they'd stick up for me
[Chorus 1]
If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man
I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
'Cause he's taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
[Verse 2]
If I were a boy
I would turn off my phone
Tell everyone it's broken
So they'd think that I was sleepin' alone
I'd put myself first
And make the rules as I go
'Cause I'd know that she'd be faithful
Waitin' for me to come home
To come home
[Chorus 1]
If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man
I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted (wanted)
'Cause he's taken you for granted (granted)
And everything you had got destroyed
[Bridge]
It's a little too late for you to come back
Say, it's just a mistake
Think I'd forgive you like that
If you thought I would wait for you
You thought wrong
[Chorus 2]
But you're just a boy
You don't understand
Yeah, you don't understand
How it feels to love a girl someday
You'll wish you were a better man
You don't listen to her
You don't care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
'Cause you've taken her for granted
And everything you have got destroyed
But you're just a boy...

L/O: to explore the use of Media Language in music videos.
At the start it shows a shot reverse shot between a womens legs and bruno mars this connotes she is attractive and that they are looking at her.
after does a flick shot of this dude.
then they start dancing in the street. by the way can we just take a moment to look at how happy the guy on the left is:)
29/11/18
Analyse the media language in your music videos. how are they similar/different.
UPTOWN FUNK
The artist/s do perform in the video: yeah, to the audience
Is there a sense of naturalism? yes and no because; the setting is however but the singers are not.
How does it follow genre conventions? its pop but looks more jazzy as the singers are wearing bright colours and there hyped, which follows hip hop genre conventions
is there any diegetic sound used and why? NO
Does the editing match the pace of the song? Does it change between the performance and narrative sections? Special effects used? why? what transitions are used and why? the editing does match the pace of the song. it also does changes between performance and the narrative. there are no special effects used in uptown funk. there are quite a few transitions, e.g. at the very shot it does a flick shot of Mark Ronson and at the end when they go from the street to the club singing.
Is the narrative linear and developed or montage? uptown funk is a montage.
Is the camera work smooth and controlled or handheld and documentary style? its a bit of both. some shots are different.
is the colour saturated or de-saturated? the colours are very saturated as the were very florissant colours.
what values does it promote? they are promoting values such as jokes and looking at women
In what ways does it follow conventions of film and TV with the setting and MES? (intertextuality) it has streets in it.
IF I WERE A BOY
The artist/s do perform in the video? NO
Is there a sense of naturalism? yes through the police station and party
How does it follow genre conventions? shows that a women is heartbroken and a man has done something wrong
is there any diegetic sound used and why? NO
Does the editing match the pace of the song? Does it change between the performance and narrative sections? Special effects used? why? what transitions are used and why? yes
6/12/18
similarity:both have urban locations which give a sense of naturalism. both of they have quite expressive editing, which goes away from the sense of naturalism. they are both highly stylised music videos. could argue both of the give messages about treating women in different ways. both use intextuality of the streets, in terms of references in using streets in ways established
differences: UPF is a non-diegetic where as beyonce is diegetic. BM is all fun where beyonce is serious and discoloured. camera work UPF has inter
reresentation: both of them represent masculinity as sexually predatory (love is hetrosexual). both of them represent the US. have both ethnicietes diverse with a sense of restless energy.
represention differences: B represents a powerful women and BM is the very opposite where they are pretty much objects. BM isnt serious about what hes singing about but B is very serious about.
Exam Practise
